Dalit rights activists call for end to caste-based discrimination

KATHMANDU: Dalit rights activists and leaders have called for the complete elimination of caste-based discrimination and untouchability against the Dalit community.

Speaking at an awareness gathering organised at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu on Saturday, they said such discriminatory practices still persist and must be eradicated.

The programme was organised by the Joint Political Dalit Struggle Committee on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Participants also demanded an amendment to Nepal’s constitution to help build the foundation of a socialist society that guarantees equal rights and equal opportunities.

Addressing the event, newly elected House of Representatives member Khagendra Sunar said communities that have long been marginalised must be prioritised as the country moves forward on a path of transformation.

He stressed that continued pressure will be maintained to ensure the complete abolition of caste-based discrimination and untouchability.

Sunar also emphasised that collective efforts are necessary so that future generations will no longer need to raise their voices against caste discrimination.

The day was observed in Nepal with the slogan: “Unified Dalit movement for equal rights and opportunities; constitutional amendment for the foundation of socialism.”
