CCTV installation begins in public vehicles across Kathmandu valley

KATHMANDU: The installation of CCTV cameras in public vehicles operating across the Kathmandu Valley began on Wednesday.

Spokesperson of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, Naresh Raj Subedi, said the initiative was formally launched amid a ceremony by Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Additional Inspector General of Police Ishwar Karki.

Subedi said the campaign to install CCTV cameras in vehicles was initiated following discussions with transport entrepreneurs and will be accelerated in the coming days. He expressed confidence that the move would help reduce road accidents, control criminal activities, and prevent misconduct and theft.

Along with CCTV cameras, dashboard cameras are also being installed in public vehicles. Subedi said complaints related to drivers fleeing after accidents, physical altercations inside buses, and mistreatment of passengers have been increasing. Monitoring through cameras will help identify facts and ensure accountability, which is why the installation of CCTV cameras has been given priority.

He added that dashboard cameras will also help monitor external activities and determine responsibility in the event of accidents, and the process will be carried forward at a rapid pace.

Speaking at the event, AIG Ishwar Karki said public transportation serves the largest number of citizens, and making it technology-driven would significantly enhance safety.

Meanwhile, police on the same day recovered 50 motorcycles and scooters that had been stolen at different locations and times within the Kathmandu Valley and returned them to their rightful owners.
