SURKHET: Birendranagar Municipality has apologized to a woman who was allegedly mistreated by municipal police while selling bayberry fruits on the roadside in Birendranagar.
Mayor Mohanmaya Dhakal personally apologized to Dhamila Chaulagain after inviting her to the municipal office and also provided relief and compensation. However, the amount of compensation has not been disclosed.
The incident involved municipal police personnel allegedly behaving improperly toward Chaulagain while she was selling bayberry from a basket near the City Bus Park area in Ward No. 6.
Chief Administrative Officer Laxmi Prasad Baskota said in a statement that necessary action would be taken against those involved in the incident.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the municipality said it had taken serious note of the behavior of municipal police during efforts to manage roadside and footpath areas within the municipality.
The municipality also pledged departmental action against the personnel involved and confirmed that relief and compensation would be provided to the victim.
The incident drew criticism on social media, where many users condemned the conduct of the municipal police. Following the backlash, Mayor Dhakal met the victim, apologized, and initiated efforts to address the issue.
The municipality said it accepts responsibility for the mistake and is committed to improving its conduct and service delivery practices.
