Harka Sampang says protests will continue until govt becomes accountable to Parliament

KATHMANDU: Shram Sanskriti Party Chair and lawmaker Harka Sampang has accused the government of failing to remain accountable to Parliament and warned that protests inside the House of Representatives will continue.

Speaking during Wednesday’s House meeting, Sampang objected to the repeated absence of the Prime Minister and ministers during discussions on the government’s policies and programs for the upcoming fiscal year.

He said Parliament is a platform meant to raise people’s concerns and insisted that the government must remain answerable to the House.

Sampang stated that the Shram Sanskriti Party has continued its protest for seven consecutive days by displaying placards and pamphlets inside Parliament.

He warned that the protest campaign would not stop until the government demonstrated responsibility and accountability toward the legislature.

The lawmaker also claimed that parliamentary rules were not being properly implemented in the case of the government.

According to Sampang, since the Prime Minister and ministers themselves emerge through the parliamentary system, they must remain accountable to Parliament.

He further urged Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal to issue a ruling requiring the Prime Minister and ministers to attend House meetings.

Earlier, Speaker Aryal had warned lawmakers of possible action after continuous protests disrupted parliamentary proceedings.
