Tsunami alert issued after powerful quake off northeastern Japan

TOKYO: A strong earthquake off the northeastern coast of Japan has prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning, with waves already detected about 50 kilometers offshore, according to public broadcaster NHK.

The quake struck near Iwate Prefecture at a relatively shallow depth of around 10 kilometers, raising concerns about potential coastal impact. Following the tremor, officials warned that tsunami waves could reach parts of the northeastern shoreline.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has urged residents in affected areas to immediately move to higher ground and follow safety advisories.

The earthquake was powerful enough to be felt far beyond the epicentre, including in the capital, Tokyo, according to reports. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as further updates are expected.
