NC central committee meets without Thapa; resignation under discussion

KATHMANDU: The central working committee meeting of the Nepali Congress has begun in Sanepa, Lalitpur, with party president Gagan Kumar Thapa absent following his recent resignation.

Thapa’s chair was left vacant as the meeting convened, symbolizing the uncertainty surrounding his leadership. The meeting is being chaired by vice president Bishwa Prakash Sharma.

The party has convened the meeting to review its electoral performance and chart its future strategy. Thapa had submitted his resignation to Sharma on Wednesday, and the issue is expected to be a key agenda item during the meeting.

Although Sharma has publicly indicated that the resignation may not be accepted, the central committee will take a formal decision after deliberations.

This marks the first time Sharma is chairing a central committee meeting following Thapa’s resignation, despite Thapa having been unanimously elected as party president through a special general convention.

Vice president Pushpa Bhusal said the meeting will carry out an in-depth review of the party’s election performance. Sharma is also expected to table a proposal to reject Thapa’s resignation.
