KATHMANDU: Football’s grandest stage is ready for a dream finale as defending champions Argentina take on Spain in the FIFA World Cup final in New York, with two generations of talent—Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal—set to headline the biggest match of the tournament.
The final presents a fascinating contrast in football philosophies. Argentina, the reigning champions, have built their campaign on resilience, experience, and the ability to overcome difficult moments. Spain, meanwhile, have impressed with their disciplined approach, possession-based style, and tactical control that has frustrated opponents throughout the tournament.
At the centre of Argentina’s hopes is Messi, whose creativity and influence continue to defy expectations. Across the pitch stands Yamal, Spain’s teenage sensation whose skill, confidence, and attacking flair have marked him as one of football’s brightest emerging stars.
When the final whistle blows and the celebrations begin, the question will be whether Argentina can secure a historic second consecutive World Cup title or whether Spain’s new generation can end a 16-year wait for another global crown.
Argentina dominated the group stage, topping Group J after wins against Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. Their knockout journey was far more demanding, requiring extra time to overcome Cape Verde 3-2 in the round of 32.
They then fought back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a dramatic last-16 encounter before beating Switzerland 3-1 after another 120-minute battle in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Argentina produced a late comeback to defeat England 2-1 in a tense contest.
Spain reached the final after an impressive unbeaten run. They finished top of Group H with victories over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, along with a draw against Cape Verde. In the knockout stages, they defeated Austria 3-0 in the round of 32 before edging past Portugal 1-0 in a tightly contested Iberian derby.
They continued their strong run with a late 2-1 victory over Belgium in the quarterfinals before producing one of the tournament’s standout performances by defeating France 2-0 in the semifinal.
Meanwhile, Argentina’s Messi is once again standing on the brink of history. The Argentine captain is set to become the oldest outfield player to appear in a World Cup final, adding another milestone to an extraordinary career.
Unlike Argentina, whose attack often revolves around Messi’s individual brilliance, Spain have built their success around teamwork and structure.
Spain entered the tournament as favourites and have justified those expectations with consistent performances. Their semifinal victory over France was widely regarded as one of the strongest displays of the competition.
