JORDAN: Two US military personnel were killed and another remains missing following Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting US forces in Jordan on Friday, according to US military officials.
The US Central Command (Centcom) said four service members were evacuated to hospitals in Jordan for medical treatment but have since been released. Other personnel who sustained minor injuries have returned to duty.
The military has not revealed the identities of the deceased troops or provided further details about the incident, including the exact location and circumstances of the attack.
In response to the attack, the United States carried out another round of airstrikes against Iran on Saturday night under the direction of President Donald Trump. Centcom said the strikes, conducted for the eighth consecutive night, were aimed at reducing Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces accused of attacking US personnel in Jordan.
The latest escalation follows renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran after a preliminary ceasefire collapsed less than a month after it was reached. The US has reimposed a blockade on Iranian ports, while Iran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei criticised the United States, accusing Washington of repeatedly violating the agreement and attempting to escalate the conflict. He said Iran would not forget what he described as American actions against the country.
Meanwhile, Jordan’s military said it intercepted 10 Iranian missiles fired into its airspace overnight, with no damage reported.
The number of US military deaths in the conflict has now reached 16 after a Navy pilot who went missing earlier this month was declared dead. Centcom said the two latest fatalities occurred while US and allied forces were responding to Iranian missile and drone attacks, adding that one service member remains unaccounted for.
