Govt asked to clarify position on Pathibhara Cable Car Project

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML lawmaker Kshitij Thebe has drawn the government’s attention to the under-construction Pathibhara (Mukumlung) Cable Car project and the slow pace of road infrastructure development in Taplejung.

Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, MP Thebe demanded the government clarify its official position on the Pathibhara Cable Car project, which he described as being linked to national pride and local development.

He said people in Taplejung were confused by reports suggesting that construction work on the cable car had been halted. “Will this project move forward or be stopped? What is the government’s official position? The people of Taplejung are waiting for clear information,” MP Thebe said.

He also raised concerns over the poor condition of roads in the district. Recalling his recent journey from Taplejung to Kathmandu, he said vehicles were unable to operate on parts of the road until a dozer cleared the route.

“How ironic is it that the track has still not been opened despite repeated extensions over the past three years?” he questioned.

Stating that the project has faced both opposition and support, Thebe said the cable car is essential for promoting tourism and generating employment opportunities. He urged the government to come up with a concrete plan that balances development with the religious and cultural sentiments of the local community.

He also called on the government to make clear decisions instead of allowing rumors to spread, and to create an environment of trust among all stakeholders.

The lawmaker further objected to the prolonged delay in the construction of the road section from Lumbini Bridge to Dobhan Bazaar in Taplejung. He said it was shameful that even the road track had not been opened despite the contract being signed in 2077 BS and the deadline expiring in 2080 BS.

MP Thebe urged the government to immediately accelerate work on the deteriorating road section and end delays in infrastructure development.
