Parliamentary hearing committee proceeds with chief justice hearing despite opposition objections

KATHMANDU: The first meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee convened to review the nomination of proposed Chief Justice Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma concluded on Tuesday after setting a same-day schedule for further proceedings despite strong objections from opposition lawmakers.

The meeting held at Singha Durbar decided to continue the hearing process on Tuesday itself, rejecting demands from opposition members for more time to study the complaints and Sharma’s work plan.

Under the revised schedule, the committee is set to begin direct discussions with complainants from 10:15 am.

The session has been arranged to hear concerns and statements related to the 16 complaints filed against Sharma.

Likewise, Sharma has been invited to appear before the committee for a hearing at 1:30 pm on Tuesday.

During the session, Sharma is expected to present his six-year work plan, after which lawmakers will question him.

Earlier in the meeting, lawmakers from Communist Party of Nepal (UML) and Nepali Communist Party had demanded that the hearing be postponed until Wednesday, arguing that lawmakers had not been given sufficient time to review the complaints and proposed work plan.

However, the committee decided to proceed with hearings involving both complainants and the proposed chief justice on the same day.
