SAN DIEGO: Three people were killed in a shooting at a mosque in San Diego, while two teenage suspects were later found dead inside a nearby vehicle, according to police.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said the incident at the Islamic Center of San Diego is being investigated as a hate crime, adding that investigators believe “there was definitely hate rhetoric involved” in the case.
Authorities said they were first alerted after a mother reported her son missing and informed police that firearms and a vehicle had also been taken. The two teens allegedly left together, both dressed in camouflage, police said.
One of the victims was a security guard at the mosque, whom Chief Wahl described as “heroic,” saying his actions likely prevented further casualties.
The Islamic Center, located in the Clairemont area, is the largest mosque in San Diego County.
