Shekhar, Shashank, Dhanraj distancing from Deuba faction, signal support for Gagan-led leadership

KATHMANDU: Following the Supreme Court’s verdict on the legitimacy dispute within the Nepali Congress (NC), a realignment within the party has begun, with leaders associated with the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction moving to distance themselves from the group.

Leaders from the Koirala family, considered the party’s moderate bloc, skipped a meeting of the Deuba faction held at Smart Palace in Dhumbarahi on Sunday afternoon. Instead, they attended a separate gathering held earlier in the day at the Bishalnagar contact office of leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala.

The meeting brought together Dr. Shekhar Koirala, Dr. Shashank Koirala, and former Vice President Dhanraj Gurung, along with other central committee members and lawmakers. Discussions reportedly focused on accepting the Supreme Court’s ruling and moving ahead with internal unity under the leadership of Gagan Thapa as party President.

Speaking after the meeting, Gurung said the participants had agreed not to support any further division within the party. “We have concluded that we will accept the Supreme Court’s verdict and move forward. We are not in favor of party split or further erosion,” he said, adding that discussions were ongoing with other leaders advocating unity.

According to participants, the gathering also reflected a shared position that the Nepali Congress must remain united despite earlier differences over the special general convention.

Gurung emphasized that the party’s tradition of respecting the judiciary remained intact and that the current situation required collective acceptance of the court’s decision.

The meeting is seen as a significant development in ongoing internal restructuring, as leaders previously aligned with different camps now begin repositioning themselves in the post-verdict political landscape.
