Govt urges local levels to launch dengue awareness drive as summer begins

KATHMANDU: With the onset of the summer season, the government has directed local levels at high risk of dengue infection to launch awareness programs aimed at prevention and control.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population Nepal, the directive was issued through the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD). Chief of the Vector-Borne Disease Section, Dr Gokarna Prasad Dahal, said local governments have been instructed to intensify public awareness campaigns.

“Awareness programs have proven effective in reducing dengue cases, so we have directed high-risk local levels to implement them,” Dahal said.

The EDCD reported a significant decline in dengue infections compared to previous years. Data shows that dengue cases dropped nearly fivefold in 2025 compared to 2024.

In 2024, a total of 41,865 dengue cases were recorded, whereas the number decreased to 8,576 in 2025.

Dahal attributed the decline to the government’s sustained anti-dengue campaign. The government had implemented a weekly campaign every Friday, encouraging government offices to search for and destroy mosquito larvae responsible for spreading dengue.

He also stressed that community participation played a crucial role in controlling and preventing the spread of dengue across the country.
