29th memorial day of Ganesh Man Singh being observed today



KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress, its sister organizations and well-wishers are observing the 29th memorial day of Ganesh Man Singh, the Supreme Commander of the 1990 People’s Movement, by organizing various programmes today.

Born on Kartik 24, 1972 BS, in Chhetrapati, Kathmandu, Singh passed away on Ashwin 2, 2054 BS. He actively participated in the movement to overthrow the Rana regime as a member of the then Praja Parishad.

After escaping from Bhadragol Jail before 2007 BS, Singh travelled to India, where he forged a political partnership with fellow leader B.P. Koirala. He later led the Nepali Rashtriya Congress, which was established in 2003 BS.

As a key figure in the 2007 BS revolution aimed at establishing democracy, Singh took part in the armed struggle on the Birgunj front.

He served as a senior minister in the government formed after the first general election in 2015 BS. Following the takeover of democracy in 2017 BS, he spent eight years in detention at Singha Durbar and Sundarijal Prison.

After being released from Sundarijal Prison alongside B.P. Koirala in 2025 BS, Singh continued to expand the party’s political organization while in exile. In 2033 BS, he returned to Nepal with B.P. Koirala, adopting the policy of national unity and reconciliation, and remained active in the struggle against the Panchayat system.
