KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has called for the formation of a commission to recommend amendments to the Constitution while preserving its fundamental values.
The decision was made public on Tuesday following the party’s Central Working Committee meeting held from August 9 to 17 at the party office in Sanepa.
The party has proposed forming a constitutional amendment recommendation commission led by a retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to suggest timely reforms to the Constitution.
The Congress said constitutional amendments should be advanced through broad-based political dialogue and participation, accusing the government of failing to show seriousness on the issue.
According to party spokesperson Devraj Ghimire, the meeting expressed serious concern over undignified activities seen in Parliament and parliamentary committees and urged elected representatives to maintain political decorum and parliamentary conduct.
The party also called on the government to operate within constitutional and legal limits, safeguard the independence of constitutional bodies, and ensure accountable, transparent and result-oriented governance towards citizens and elected representatives.
The meeting also expressed concern over alleged lack of transparency and political appointments in positions filled through public calls in the name of ensuring transparency, spokesperson Ghimire said.
Meanwhile, the Congress has formed a 15th General Convention Management Committee under party president Gagan Thapa. Thapa will present the main political proposal at the convention, with “The Coming Decade, Democracy and the Congress” receiving special emphasis.
The party has also formed a 15th General Convention Publicity Committee under spokesperson Devraj Ghimire.
Similarly, the meeting decided to form a statute amendment committee led by General Secretary Pradeep Paudel to recommend necessary changes to make the party statute more relevant to current circumstances and strengthen the party organisation.
