KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has warned of increased monsoon activity over the next two days, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in several parts of Nepal.
According to the department, Bagmati Province’s hill districts received heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, with the Melamchi rainfall station recording 105.4 mm of precipitation.
DHM said the monsoon is expected to intensify as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal moves northwestward.
Department spokesperson Bibhuti Pokharel said most parts of the country are likely to experience moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning on Saturday and Sunday, while some areas could see heavy to very heavy rain.
Heavy rainfall is forecast in the hilly and Himalayan regions, as well as in parts of the Tarai in Koshi, Bagmati, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces, with isolated areas of the Tarai in Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces also likely to be affected.
The department added that very heavy rainfall is possible at isolated locations in the hills and Tarai of Koshi, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces.
DHM has urged the public to remain alert, warning that intense rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides, inundation and rising river levels.
The department also cautioned that adverse weather may disrupt air travel, tourism, agriculture and transportation, and advised people and relevant agencies to stay updated with the latest weather information and take necessary precautions.
