Monsoon to remain active across Nepal this week

KATHMANDU: Monsoon activity is expected to remain active across Nepal throughout the week, with the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the country, particularly around the middle of the week.

According to meteorologist Binu Maharjan, the monsoon low-pressure line is expected to remain above its average position in western Nepal and shift slightly above the average position in eastern Nepal from midweek, staying close to the Terai region. As a result, rainfall activity is likely to remain active nationwide.

Maharjan said moderate rainfall is expected in many areas of the Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces during the beginning and middle of the week, with snowfall possible in higher Himalayan areas. Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two locations at the beginning and end of the week, while some areas may experience heavy rainfall around midweek.

Moderate rainfall is also expected in the Himalayan regions of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, with chances of heavy rainfall at isolated places during the middle of the week.

In the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, moderate rainfall is likely at many locations throughout the week. The Department has warned of heavy rainfall in some areas at the beginning and end of the week, and heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations during the middle of the week.

Rainfall activity is also expected to increase in the hilly areas of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces around midweek, with some places likely to receive heavy rainfall.

The Terai region is also expected to experience rainfall throughout the week. Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the Terai areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces during the beginning and middle of the week, with chances of heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations around midweek.

The Department has also forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in the Terai areas of Madhes and Sudurpaschim provinces at the beginning of the week and in some areas during midweek.

With rainfall expected to intensify in the middle of the week, the department has advised residents of riverbank areas, landslide-prone zones and locations vulnerable to urban flooding to take necessary precautions.
