Nepal Bar Association to hold symbolic lantern protest over Supreme Court situation

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Bar Association has announced a symbolic protest over recent developments and growing tensions at the Supreme Court.

The association has decided to light lanterns in broad daylight on Tuesday as a form of protest, citing concerns over the state of the judiciary.

A meeting of the Bar’s central executive committee held on Monday concluded that the situation had deteriorated to the point where even writ petitions could not be registered at the court.

According to Bar President Dr Bijay Prasad Mishra, lanterns will be lit at the association’s office premises at 1 pm on Tuesday “in search of truth and justice.”

He said the inability of citizens to even register writ petitions and cases at the court was a matter of serious concern.

“If writs and cases cannot even be registered in court, where will citizens seek justice?” he said.

The protest announcement comes after court administrative staff reportedly refused to comply with an order issued on Monday by Acting Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla and fled carrying case files.

Malla had ordered that petitions filed against the recommendation of Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma for the post of Chief Justice be formally registered instead of being rejected.
