CPN-UML Secretariat meeting taking place today

KATHMANDU: Amid growing debate within the party following its election defeat, the CPN-UML Secretariat is scheduled to meet today to discuss organizational responsibilities, leadership issues and future strategy.

According to Dr. Bhishma Adhikari, secretary at the UML Central Office, the meeting will be held at 1 pm on Monday at the residence of party Chairman KP Sharma Oli in Gundu, Bhaktapur.

The meeting, which was postponed last Saturday, is being convened today. Party leaders said the main agenda of the meeting will be the division of responsibilities among leaders following the UML’s 11th General Convention, as work allocation has yet to be finalized.

According to party sources, the meeting is expected to decide on deploying central committee members to municipalities across the country.

Each central member is likely to be assigned responsibility for a municipality and directed to strengthen party organization in preparation for the upcoming local elections.

Similarly, the meeting is also expected to distribute responsibilities among the party’s central departments and various bodies.

The UML Secretariat is also likely to discuss fixing the date for the party’s central committee meeting to review the elections held in March.

Leaders said discussions may also cover issues related to landless squatters who were forcibly evicted by the government, their management, recent government actions and their impact on the public.

Following the party’s election defeat, voices demanding the resignation of UML Chairman Oli have also started surfacing within the party.

Today’s meeting is also expected to discuss leadership transition and the possible role and responsibilities of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari within the party.
