Rastriya Swatantra Party’s Madhesh founding chair Mamta Sharma resigns

KATHMANDU: Mamta Sharma, the founding chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Madhesh, has resigned from the party, including from her general membership.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Sharma said she had joined the party inspired by its core slogans, “Youth must enter politics” and “Choose the competent.” However, she expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the party’s recent decisions and working style regarding the upcoming March 5 election were contrary to its founding values, statute, and public commitments.

“I joined this party inspired by the slogan that youth should enter politics and that capable individuals should be chosen. But I have experienced that the methods adopted by the party for the upcoming election, its decisions and working style are exactly opposite to its founding principles and public commitments,” she said in the statement.

Sharma accused the party leadership of failing to properly evaluate the contributions of dedicated party members in Madhesh and of acting against established procedures and the party statute. She further alleged that party decisions were influenced by financial irregularities.

“Primarily, I have found that party decisions have been driven by financial irregularities, which has created a situation that undermines my self-respect and political values. I cannot remain silent as a witness to these activities,” she stated.

Sharma had played a key role in expanding the party’s presence across eight districts in Madhesh. However, internal tensions surfaced after she was denied a ticket for the upcoming election. Her dissatisfaction reportedly deepened after the party’s spokesperson Manish Jha and leader Amesh Singh were accused of influencing ticket distribution decisions.

Her resignation has brought internal disputes within the RSP’s Madhesh chapter into the open ahead of the elections.
