Foreign Minister Sharma calls on Bangladeshi PM Rahman



KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Bala Nanda Sharma met with the newly elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, on Tuesday evening.

Sharma extended warm felicitations and delivered a congratulatory message from Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who praised Rahman’s election victory and emphasized her commitment to fostering Nepal-Bangladesh ties based on mutual respect, shared priorities, and partnership for the benefit of both nations.

The Foreign Minister also congratulated Rahman on leading the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to a decisive win in the February 12 national elections and commended Bangladesh for conducting a smooth and successful democratic transition.

Prime Minister Rahman thanked Sharma for attending the oath-taking ceremony and noted that her presence reflected the solidarity and goodwill of the government and people of Nepal toward Bangladesh.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, energy, connectivity, education, and tourism. Rahman also conveyed his best wishes for Nepal’s upcoming parliamentary elections, according to the Nepali Embassy in Bangladesh.

Prior to the meeting, Sharma attended the oath-taking ceremony of the Prime Minister and Members of the Council of Ministers, administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the National Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad) campus.

During her visit, Sharma also met with Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, leader of the opposition and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, to discuss key areas of bilateral cooperation. The Foreign Minister’s visit to Bangladesh runs from February 16 to 19.
