Shekhar: Congress dispute now in Court, urges participation in election

KATHMANDU: Senior Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has said that, as a centrist, he is facing pressure within the party but will not be swayed from the middle path.

Addressing a gathering of party leaders on Sunday in Kathmandu, Koirala emphasized, “The path of moderation and truth is difficult and challenging, but victory belongs to those who follow it. I am walking the path of truth and will not be distracted.”

He highlighted that the party has been influenced by extremism and affirmed his commitment to remain on a centrist course, avoiding any radical pressures.

Koirala stressed that, especially in challenging times, the party needs moderate leaders to help navigate crises.

The discussion, held at Anupam Foodland in Battisputali, also saw leaders expressing concern over uncertainties surrounding the party’s 15th general convention and the scheduled March 5 elections. Koirala assured attendees that the party will participate in the elections, noting that there is no alternative given the country’s and democracy’s current challenges.

He also mentioned that he had requested the Election Commission to postpone the nomination date from January 20 to ensure smoother electoral procedures, but expressed concern over the lack of guaranteed security and conducive conditions for the vote.

Regarding ongoing disputes within the party, Koirala said that since the matter has now reached the courts, the party will abide by the judiciary’s decisions. He also directed leaders and workers to simultaneously prepare for the 15th general convention alongside the elections.

Local leaders and workers at the event expressed confidence that, even if the Election Commission errs, the courts would ensure justice.
