ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier: Nepal to face Thailand in opening match today

KATHMANDU: The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier, hosted by Nepal, begins today.

The Nepali women’s cricket team will open their campaign against Thailand in the first match of the tournament on Sunday.

On the eve of the competition, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) held a press conference on Saturday evening, expressing confidence that the national team will deliver an improved performance. Team captain Indu Verma said Nepal is aiming at least to reach the Super Six stage, citing improvements in batting, fielding, and the advantage of playing on home soil.

A total of 10 teams are participating in the tournament, including Nepal, Scotland, the United States, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, and the Netherlands.

Nepal has played practice matches against the Netherlands, Thailand, and the United States. Captain Verma said these matches helped the team learn how to compete against strong opponents and turn games in their favor.

This is the largest women’s cricket tournament Nepal has hosted to date. Captain Verma said hosting such an event will provide valuable exposure and inspiration for the next generation of players.

During the event, team captains from participating countries, including Namibia and the United States, noted that the practice matches helped them understand Nepal’s pitch and ground conditions and served as effective preparation for the tournament.

The opening match between Nepal and Thailand will begin at 9:00 am on Sunday at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground.
