Consumer Court orders Rs 3.9 million compensation in maternal death case

KATHMANDU: The Consumer Court has ordered Everest Hospital and a gynaecologist to pay a total of Rs 3.9 million in compensation to the family of Manita Sharma, who died during childbirth.

According to the court’s Information Officer Homanath Kandel, the court directed Everest Hospital to pay Rs 3 million, while gynaecologist Dr Jyotsana Sharma Tiwari has been ordered to pay Rs 900,000.

Manita’s husband, Subash Parajuli, had filed a case at the Consumer Court, alleging that medical negligence by the hospital and the attending doctor led to his wife’s death.

Following hearings on the case, the court held both the hospital and the doctor liable and ordered them to provide compensation to the victim’s family.

The verdict is being viewed as a significant decision in terms of ensuring accountability of healthcare institutions and medical professionals, as well as protecting patients’ rights in the delivery of health services.
