KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has accused the Balendra Shah-led government of running a planned campaign to spread misinformation against other political parties.
Speaking at an event organised to launch the updated version of the UML party website and mobile application at the party’s central office in Chyasal on Friday, Oli claimed that a “more extreme Goebbels-style” approach was being used to defame political opponents.
Oli said the trend of spreading false information in society has been increasing and claimed that UML has been the most affected by such campaigns.
“By providing false information to society, we have been attacked the most. We need to remain alert about this,” he said.
He stressed the need for the party to regularly update its activities and achievements through digital platforms. Oli acknowledged that UML had fallen behind in countering what he described as “information attacks” against the party but said it would now move forward with a new approach.
Oli claimed that UML has not weakened because of challenges and would emerge stronger through renewal and restructuring.
“We have faced setbacks, but we are not finished. We are an independent party standing on our own feet. We are not a vine that rises with someone else’s support,” he said.
He also claimed that efforts to isolate UML would continue to increase but said the party would not be discouraged by such challenges. According to Oli, UML has the ability to revive and rebuild itself.
Oli urged party cadres to widely share details and photographs of development projects carried out during his leadership through digital platforms, emphasising the need for effective use of information technology.
