Pipeline installation begins to expand Melamchi water distribution

KATHMANDU: Work has begun on laying 1,800-mm-diameter transmission pipes in the Sundarijal area to enhance the distribution of water from the Melamchi Drinking Water Project across the Kathmandu Valley.

According to the Project Implementation Directorate (PID), this is the largest-diameter pipeline ever used for drinking water distribution in Nepal.

The directorate has also initiated processes to expand the drinking water distribution network in Bhaktapur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi, Kapan, Jorpati and Pepsicola. Director and Engineer Ram Kumar Shrestha said bids have already been invited for network expansion in five areas, while procurement and construction procedures for other locations will begin soon.

“We are working in both day and night shifts to ensure the effective distribution of Melamchi water to various parts of the Kathmandu Valley,” Shrestha said.

The PID is simultaneously carrying out the construction of reserve tanks, pipeline extensions and other supporting infrastructure at multiple locations.

According to the directorate, the entire water distribution system will be handed over to Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) after testing and commissioning of the newly installed pipelines are completed.

Once the system is transferred to KUKL, regular and reliable supply of Melamchi water to households across the Kathmandu Valley is expected to improve significantly, Shrestha said.
