Bamdev Gautam set to contest House of Representatives election from Bardiya-1

KATHMANDU: Nepali Communist Party (NCP) leader Bamdev Gautam is set to contest the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.

Currently a member of the National Assembly, the party has confirmed that Gautam will contest the election from Bardiya constituency number 1 under the first-past-the-post system. He is preparing to resign from his position as a National Assembly member on Sunday.

NCP coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal has advised Gautam to contest from Bardiya-1. Gautam is currently in Bardiya, actively engaged in election preparations.

In the 2074 BS general election, Gautam was defeated in the same constituency by Nepali Congress leader Sanjay Kumar Gautam. At the time, Sanjay Gautam publicly alleged that UML chair KP Sharma Oli had orchestrated his defeat.

He claimed that after Gautam staked a claim for the prime ministership, Oli deployed UML leaders, including Surya Thapa, to Bardiya to ensure his loss.

After remaining outside the UML for nearly four years, Gautam rejoined the NCP on Kartik 19. He has since claimed that he would help the party secure one crore votes and emerge as the largest party with a majority.

Meanwhile, Lalbir Chaudhary, who was elected in 2079 from Bardiya constituency number 2 representing the Nagarik Unmukti Party, is set to receive an NCP ticket. The Nagarik Unmukti Party has since been merged into the NCP.
