Govt committed to strengthening Nepal Police: PM Shah

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Balendra Shah has said the government is committed to strengthening the Nepal Police and enhancing its capacity to respond to potential disasters and emerging security challenges.

In a message issued on Friday to mark the 71st Police Day, Shah said the government had prioritised policy guidance, legal reforms, modern training and infrastructure development to empower police personnel who serve the public and remain at the forefront of emergency response operations.

He also announced plans to develop the Nepal Police Hospital into a medical college to improve healthcare services for police personnel, their dependent family members and the general public.

The prime minister paid tribute to police personnel who lost their lives in the recent Bhotekoshi-Trishuli disasters and in the line of duty over the years. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured or disabled while performing their duties.

This year’s Police Day is being observed under the slogan, “Wheelchair in Disaster, Umbrella in Crisis, Technology-Enhanced Nepal Police.”

Shah said the publication of Police Mirror-2083 on the occasion was expected to connect the Nepal Police’s history and present with future generations while preserving the institution’s legacy.

The prime minister also expressed concern over the rise in financial and cybercrime, saying the government was working to strengthen prevention and control measures.

He said arrangements were being made for Nepal Police to work with Nepal Rastra Bank, internet and telecommunications service providers, and digital wallet operators to address public complaints more effectively.

Preparations are also underway to establish artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, an Aerial Security and Support Unit, and an Integrated Anti-Scam Centre, according to Shah.

He expressed gratitude to friendly countries and international development partners for their support in disaster management, technological advancement and infrastructure development within the Nepal Police.

“The Nepal Police continues to work to maintain internal peace, security and order in the country. The true test of a public servant comes during a crisis. Patience, sound decisions and efficient performance during difficult times enable us to overcome challenges,” Shah said in his message.

The prime minister’s congratulatory message was read out at the Police Day programme by Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki.
