Westerly winds, low-pressure system bring colder weather

KATHMANDU: Nepal is currently experiencing a partial influence of westerly winds, while a western low-pressure system is also expected to affect the weather, according to the Weather Forecasting Division.

With the monsoon having withdrawn and the influence of westerly winds increasing, temperatures have been gradually declining, bringing colder conditions to many parts of the country.

The division has forecast rain and snowfall in several parts of the country this afternoon and tonight (Friday).

Moderate to heavy rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is possible at a few places in the mountainous regions, as well as in the hilly areas of Lumbini and Gandaki provinces. One or two places in the remaining hilly regions may also experience similar conditions this afternoon.

Similarly, light rain or snowfall is likely at one or two places in the mountainous regions of Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces tonight.

In a notice issued on Thursday, the division said the likelihood of rain and snowfall had increased due to the western low-pressure system. It also forecast scattered rainfall in the Kathmandu Valley today.

Light rain is possible at one or two places in the valley this afternoon or evening, with the division putting the probability of rainfall at 30 percent.

The monsoon has withdrawn from Nepal, marking the official end of the monsoon season and the beginning of the post-monsoon period.
