KATHMANDU: A meeting of major political parties on Wednesday agreed to form a high-level political mechanism under the leadership of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane to coordinate efforts on disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
RSP spokesperson Jagadish Kharel said the mechanism will include representatives from major political parties, including the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Nepali Communist Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Shram Sanskriti Party, Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal, Janamat Party and Rastriya Janamorcha, among others.
“RSP Chair Lamichhane called the meeting of the all-party mechanism the day after the flood. It has now been agreed to continue a high-level political mechanism to promote sustainable development and disaster risk reduction,” Kharel said.
The meeting also agreed to form an all-party high-level parliamentary committee within a week, with representation based on the number of seats held by each party in Parliament.
Kharel said the parties would formally request the Speaker and Parliament to facilitate the formation of the committee.
“It has been agreed to form an all-party parliamentary high-level mechanism. A parliamentary committee will be formed within a week. A request will be made to the Speaker and Parliament for representation based on the number of seats held by each party. All parties are ready to form the committee within Parliament,” he said.
The meeting also discussed Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s upcoming participation in the United Nations General Assembly. The participating leaders urged the government to strongly raise Nepal’s concerns about climate justice at the international forum, particularly in light of the country’s vulnerability to climate-induced disasters.
According to Kharel, leaders and representatives of the participating parties thanked Lamichhane for taking the initiative to convene the meeting and advance discussions on a broader political mechanism for disaster response, risk reduction and sustainable development.
