BHADRAPUR: Japanese encephalitis (JE) cases have increased in Jhapa with the onset of the monsoon, with a new infection reported in Mechinagar, taking the district’s total number of cases to 10.
According to the Public Health Office, five people, including three men and two women, have died from the disease. Four of the confirmed cases are from Mechinagar, while the remaining cases have been reported from Haldibari, Barhadashi, Kachankawal, Birtamod and Arjundhara.
Two patients are currently receiving treatment, while three others have recovered and been discharged. Among those infected is a seven-month-old infant.
Public Health Inspector Bishwanath Shrestha has urged residents to take preventive measures during the monsoon, particularly by removing stagnant water around their homes, where mosquitoes can breed.
JE is transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, and authorities have stressed the need for greater vigilance during the rainy season to reduce the risk of transmission.
