Major flooding likely in rivers in Kathmandu and other districts



KATHMANDU: The Flood Forecasting Division has warned of a potential rise in water levels and flooding in small rivers and streams across Kathmandu and several other districts today.

According to a bulletin issued by the Division this morning, water levels in the Koshi, Narayani, Bagmati, Karnali and Mahakali rivers and their tributaries, as well as the Kankai, Kamala, Babai, East Rapti and West Rapti rivers, are currently below the alert level. However, the Division has warned that water levels could rise over the next 24 hours.

The Division has forecast a significant rise in the flow of small rivers in 28 districts, including Kathmandu and surrounding areas, with a moderate risk of flash floods.

The bulletin said small rivers in Sindhupalchowk, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Gorkha, Dhading, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavrepalanchowk, Makawanpur, Tanahu, Lamjung, Kaski, Parbat, Myagdi, Baglung, Syangja, Palpa, Jajarkot, Rukum Paschim, Surkhet, Banke, Bardiya, Baitadi, Doti, Dadeldhura, Kailali and Kanchanpur are likely to experience a significant increase in water flow today.

The Division has urged people in these areas to remain alert to the possibility of flash floods and take necessary precautions.
