Monsoon active, heavy rain forecast today



KATHMANDU: Monsoon winds are currently affecting the country, with the monsoon trough positioned near its average location in the east and closer to Nepal than its average position in the west.

According to the Weather Forecasting Division, the weather is currently generally cloudy across the country. Moderate rainfall is occurring at many places in Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, at some places in Lumbini and Karnali provinces, and at one or two places in the hilly areas of Koshi Province. Heavy rainfall is also occurring at one or two places in Gandaki Province.

This afternoon, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy nationwide. Moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at many places in the mountainous and hilly areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces and at some places in the mountainous and hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, it said.

Moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is also likely at many places in the Terai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as at some places in the Terai areas of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and Madhesh and Koshi provinces, according to the Division.

It has also forecast heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly and Terai areas of Gandaki and Karnali provinces and in the hilly and Terai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Tonight, generally cloudy conditions are expected to continue across the country. Moderate rain and snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning are likely at some places in the mountainous areas. Moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is also expected at many places in the hilly areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces and at some places in the hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces.

Similarly, moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely at many places in the Terai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces and at some places in the Terai areas of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as Madhesh and Koshi provinces.

Heavy rainfall is likely in the hilly areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces and at one or two places in the Terai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces. The division has also warned of the possibility of very heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly and Terai areas of Sudurpaschim Province.

The Division has urged people to remain alert, particularly in areas where heavy rainfall is expected, due to the risk of flash floods, floods, landslides and soil erosion.

As rainfall could affect daily life as well as agriculture, health, tourism, mountaineering, road and air transport, the public has been advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather information and forecasts issued by the division.
