Prime Minister holds meeting with Chief Ministers on intergovernmental coordination

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balen Shah held a meeting with chief ministers from different provinces on Thursday to discuss coordination among the three tiers of government and the challenges faced by provinces.

The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office, where the prime minister sought updates from the chief ministers on issues seen in their respective provinces, including the status of development and construction projects.

According to Indra Bahadur Baniya, discussions also focused on ensuring proper distribution of resources and addressing administrative and financial problems faced by provincial governments.

He said the meeting also touched on strengthening coordination, cooperation and coexistence among the federal, provincial and local levels of government. Baniya informed the prime minister that grants allocated to provinces have been decreasing compared to previous years and that several pride projects in the province have been facing implementation challenges.

Similarly, Yam Lal Kandel said the prime minister sought updates on the overall situation of the province.

Kandel added that although the constitution has defined powers for the provinces, some recent circulars issued by the federal government have not been in line with constitutional provisions. Issues related to development works and administrative challenges were also raised during the meeting.

Chief ministers of Koshi Province and Sudurpashchim Province were absent from the meeting due to personal reasons.

The Prime Minister’s Secretariat said the discussion aimed to build a shared understanding on the country’s current economic situation, infrastructure development, improvement in service delivery and maintaining good governance.
