Opposition parties urge Parliament to follow established practices, stress tradition in committee leadership

KATHMANDU: Opposition parties represented in the House of Representatives have stressed the need to follow established parliamentary practices and ensure lawmakers are advanced in line with long-standing traditions.

In a joint meeting held at Singha Durbar on Thursday, leaders from the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and Nepali Communist Party held discussions with Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal, urging that Parliament should be conducted in accordance with established procedures and norms.

The leaders also emphasized that the Public Accounts Committee should traditionally be led by the main opposition party, calling for the institutionalization of this practice.

Following the meeting, NCP Chief Whip Yubaraj Dulal said the delegation had requested continuity of past parliamentary practices, including consultation-based decision-making among all parties.

He added that the Speaker had assured the leaders that the upcoming parliamentary proceedings would be conducted in a coordinated manner following adequate consultation with all parties.

Dulal also informed that the NCP would support the Nepali Congress for the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee.

The meeting was attended by Congress leaders Arjun Narsingh K.C., Bharat Khadka, Bhishmaraj Angdembe, and Yogesh Gautam, UML leaders Gururaj Baral and Padma Aryal, and Maoist Centre leaders Barshaman Pun and Yubaraj Dulal.
