RSP to give Public Accounts Committee chair to main opposition

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has decided to hand over the leadership of the Public Accounts Committee to the main opposition party.

Party General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti said the decision was made in line with parliamentary norms, which require the committee to be led by the principal opposition.

With this move, the Nepali Congress is set to secure the chair of the influential committee. The party had already signaled its intent to field a candidate for the post.

Nepali Congress leader Bhishmaraj Angdembe has stated that the party will stake its claim to the chairmanship from the opposition’s side.

Within the Nepali Congress, leaders including Bhishmaraj Angdembe and Nishkal Rai are being discussed as potential candidates for the position.

Following the 2022 elections, Rishikesh Pokharel of the CPN-UML had been appointed as chair of the Public Accounts Committee. The move had drawn criticism at the time, as a ruling party leader had taken charge of a committee traditionally led by the opposition.
