KATHMANDU: The Blue Diamond Society on Monday honored Bhumika Shrestha, who has been nominated to the House of Representatives of Nepal, representing the sexual and gender minority community.
Shrestha, nominated under the proportional representation system from the Rastriya Swatantra Party, was presented with a pen as a token of honor during a program held at the society’s office.
Speaking at the event, Shrestha expressed commitment to raising the voices of indigenous peoples, Muslims, Madhesis, persons with disabilities, and sexual and gender minority communities in parliament. She also stressed the need for support, cooperation and suggestions from all stakeholders to effectively advocate for community issues.
Former president of the society Pinky Gurung said the representation of the community in parliament after a long struggle has brought new hope.
Similarly, the society’s executive director Manisha Dhakal presented the pen to Shrestha and urged her to take initiatives to repeal discriminatory laws.
Shrestha is set to become the first transgender woman to represent the community in Nepal’s parliament.
