Nepal’s public debt reaches Rs 2.878 trillion



KATHMANDU: Nepal’s total public debt has reached Rs 2.878 trillion as of mid-March of the current fiscal year 2025/26, according to the Public Debt Management Office.

A report published by the office shows that the country’s total public debt stood at Rs 2.878 trillion as of the mid-March, which is equivalent to 47.13 percent of Nepal’s gross domestic product.

At the beginning of this fiscal year, Nepal’s total public debt was Rs 2.674 trillion. By mid-March, the amount had increased by Rs 204.24 billion.

Of the total public debt, external debt accounts for 53.16 percent, amounting to Rs 1.530 trillion, while domestic debt stands at Rs 1.348 trillion, or 46.84 percent.

In terms of GDP ratio, domestic debt accounts for 22.07 percent and external debt for 25.06 percent.

The government had targeted mobilizing Rs 595.66 billion in public debt during the current fiscal year. However, by mid-March, it had raised Rs 300.46 billion, equivalent to 50.44 percent of the annual target.

During the review period, the government achieved 67.31 percent of its annual target for domestic borrowing, raising Rs 243.66 billion. In contrast, only 24.31 percent of the external borrowing target was met, amounting to Rs 56.80 billion.

According to the report, the government spent a total of Rs 242.26 billion on principal and interest payments on public debt by mid-March.
