KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started managing dry waste internally in a bid to reduce the volume of garbage transported to the Bancharedanda Landfill Site.
The metropolis has begun dry waste management in 10 wards as part of the initiative.
According to Sarita Rai, chief of the Environment Management Department at KMC, around 3.19 metric tons of waste is currently being transported daily to the landfill site.
KMC has divided the metropolis into seven zones and awarded contracts to private companies to purchase dry waste collected from households across all 32 wards. The project was awarded through a competitive process with a total contract amount of Rs 68.72 billion, including tax.
As part of the initiative, a waste transfer centre has been established in each zone to streamline the management process.
The companies contracted to collect dry waste include Nepsemack Services Pvt. Ltd., Waste Solution Pvt. Ltd., Creative Sanitation Pvt. Ltd., Mechi Poly Industries, Nepal Energy Development Company and Poly Waste Management.
