Sumana Shrestha criticizes govt’s ‘double standards’ in appointments

KATHMANDU: Former minister Sumana Shrestha has expressed dissatisfaction over what she called double standards in the government’s working style and appointment process.

In a message posted on social media, Shrestha accused the ruling side of using wordplay to cover up its shortcomings.

Taking a swipe at the government, she said those who label others’ actions as nepotism, favoritism, and nepo baby tend to describe similar actions on their own side as recognition of contribution.

She further argued that power-sharing arrangements within the government are being portrayed as distribution of responsibilities, while alleged political setting is being framed as mutual relations.

Shrestha also claimed that when the opposition raises questions, the ruling side tends to dismiss it as opposing everything, while portraying its own actions as subtle and constructive oversight.

Questioning the lack of transparency, she also raised concerns over reports prepared by various committees and task forces formed by the government, which have yet to be made public.

“Even now, the report has not been made public—where is the report?” she wrote.

Referring to recent political appointments and decisions, Shrestha suggested that such decisions may not have been made independently.

“Whose decision is this really—the decision-maker’s or the one being made to decide?” she asked, hinting at possible pressure behind the government’s decisions.

Her remarks come amid controversy over the appointment of Adarsh Kumar Shrestha, private secretary to Prime Minister Sushila Karki, as chairperson of the National Trust for Nature Conservation.
