NC infighting prompts heightened security at EC

KATHMANDU: Security has been tightened at the Election Commission (EC) premises in Bahadur Bhawan, Kantipath to avert clashes between two rival factions of the Nepali Congress (NC).

Leaders and cadres aligned with Gagan Thapa have gathered at the Election Commission, while leaders from the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction are also heading there. Anticipating a possible confrontation, security personnel have been deployed in and around Bahadur Bhawan.

Cadres from the Gagan Thapa faction are currently staging a protest at the Commission. Earlier, during a press conference at the party’s central office in Sanepa, Nepali Congress Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka warned that protests would be launched if the party failed to receive official recognition.
