Deuba faction raises objection to ‘illegal’ special general convention

KATHMANDU: The Sher Bahadur Deuba-led faction of the Nepali Congress has raised objections to a recent special general convention, claiming it was convened in violation of party rules.

Speaking at a press conference at the party’s central office in Sanepa, acting party president Purna Bahadur Khadka said the party operates strictly according to its constitution, and the recent gathering under the guise of a special general convention fell outside its provisions.

“Political parties have a constitutional responsibility to uphold the law. Yet, in a challenging situation, some individuals convened a meeting in the name of a special general convention and acted outside party discipline,” Khadka said.

He added that the Deuba faction visited the Election Commission to formally highlight its concerns regarding legality, party rules, and the Nepali Congress constitution. “We have drawn serious attention to the fact that this meeting, held under the name of a special general convention, reached the Election Commission in contradiction to the party’s statute,” he said.

Khadka said only the Central Working Committee has the authority to convene regular or special general conventions. “No one else has been granted this right in the party’s statute. The rules are clear: a special general convention can only take place through a decision of the Central Working Committee,” he noted.

He also clarified that the original petition for a special convention merely requested either a regular or special convention, depending on circumstances, and that the party had proceeded with preparations for a regular convention in line with party rules.
