KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Narendra Kumar Kerung has demanded disclosure of reports of various probe and study committees formed by the government itself.
During special hour of today’s House of Representatives (HoR) meeting, lawmaker Kerung said that Nepal has a tradition of forming probe committee or commission following serious incidents and keeping the reports in the drawer. “Whenever a serious incident occurs, people ask questions, pressure on the streets increases, the government forms commissions and committees, then a report is prepared, and that report just ends up being kept in a drawer. The affected people wait their whole lives for justice,” he said.
The lawmaker noted that the current government has also formed ten commissions and committees to investigate various issues, with some reports still pending, some submitted but not implemented, and some not made public.
He specifically demanded disclosure of the report of a three-member committee led by former Justice Achyut Prasad Bhandari to investigate issues regarding the Home Minister’s assets, share investments, and connections with controversial businessmen.
Since the Home Ministry deals with sensitive matters related to peace, security, and crime investigations, an impartial investigation into the questions raised about the person leading it and the disclosure of its basis is necessary, he added.
He also demanded disclosure of the status of the report prepared by the committee led by former Special Court Justice Prem Raj Karki on the role of security agencies during the Gen-Z movement.
Further, he said that Parliament should be informed whether the recommendations mentioned in the report of the committee formed to study incidents related to gold smuggling have been implemented.
MP Kerung also requested that the discussion paper on constitutional amendments be brought to public domain.
Regarding the study report on the gen-Z movement, Kerung said that only the recommendation for action against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak was made public and demanded an investigation into former security officials, other political figures, as well as allegations of infiltration and seizure during the movement.
Alleging that the government is seeking accountability only on topics favorable to it, MP Kerung described the tendency not to disclose reports as ‘selective accountability.'(RSS)
