KATHMANDU: Nepal and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) have established diplomatic relations, bringing the number of countries with which Nepal maintains diplomatic ties to 185.
Lok Bahadur Thapa, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations, and Jeem S. Lippwe, Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations, signed a joint statement to this effect, according to the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN.
On the occasion, the two representatives exchanged views on cooperation in various areas of mutual interest, including collaboration in national and international forums.
Micronesia, an island nation in the western Pacific Ocean, comprises more than 600 islands. It gained independence on November 3, 1986, and became a member of the United Nations on September 17, 1991.
The country covers a total area of 701 square kilometres and has an estimated population of around 100,000. Both Nepal and Micronesia are members of the Group of 77 (G77).
