Shashank Koirala: I am not in favour of splitting the party

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr Shashank Koirala has clarified that he is not in favour of splitting the party.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the institutional non-establishment faction’s national gathering on Saturday, Koirala said the gathering was not organised with the intention of forming a new political party.

He said such gatherings are necessary to review and update the party and its ideology in line with changing circumstances.

Koirala also made it clear that he was not in favour of forming a new party. He said that even if the court delivers a verdict against their position, all sides would hold discussions and decide the party’s future policy.

The Congress leader claimed that the party’s upcoming general convention would be held under the leadership of party president Sher Bahadur Deuba. However, he said further discussions would be held with the concerned sides if the situation did not develop as expected.

Commenting on the incumbent government, Koirala accused it of failing to deliver any concrete, new or significant work despite having a majority.

He described the current government as an ordinary “caretaker” government.

Koirala also said the possibility of the government completing its five-year term or the country heading for mid-term elections before that could not be ruled out.
