KATHMANDU: Construction of the Gen-Z Martyrs Memorial, planned to honor those who lost their lives during the Gen-Z movement of September 8 and 9, 2025, has come to a standstill, casting uncertainty over the future of the project.
The memorial, which is being built at the International Sports Complex in Satdobato, was envisioned as a lasting tribute to the movement’s martyrs. While construction work had begun some time ago, activities at the site have now halted.
The project was initiated after the 124th Board Meeting of the National Sports Council (NSC), chaired by then Minister for Youth and Sports Bablu Gupta, decided to provide the necessary land for the memorial park.
The concept of the memorial was introduced to institutionalize the memory of those who lost their lives during the movement and ensure that their contributions are remembered by future generations.
Authorities had planned to construct the site in a historically significant and distinctly Nepali architectural style, reflecting both national identity and the spirit of the movement.
According to the original design, the memorial would include statues of 42 martyrs among the 45 people who died during the protests, along with a remembrance site and other structures highlighting their sacrifices and contributions.
The suspension of construction has raised concerns about delays and the project’s long-term viability.
Although the memorial was expected to become a landmark commemorating one of the country’s most significant youth-led movements, no clear explanation has been provided regarding the halt in construction work.
Officials have yet to announce when work will resume or whether any changes will be made to the project’s design, budget, or timeline.
With the site currently lying incomplete, questions remain over whether the memorial will be completed as originally envisioned and when the planned tribute to the Gen-Z movement’s martyrs will finally take shape.
