International Day of Families being observed today

KATHMANDU: The International Day of Families is being observed across the world today through various programs and events highlighting sustainable development, social inclusion, and the important role of families in society.

On the occasion, a special discussion is being held at the United Nations Headquarters focusing on policy solutions for sustainable development in preparation for the upcoming Second World Summit for Social Development.

The United Nations has been giving priority to family-related issues since the 1980s. In 1983, following a recommendation by the Economic and Social Council, the Commission for Social Development adopted a resolution on the “Role of the Family in the Development Process” and urged the Secretary-General to increase global awareness about the challenges, needs, and solutions related to families.

According to the United Nations, in 1985 the Economic and Social Council recommended that the General Assembly include the topic “Family in the Development Process” in its agenda.

Since then, efforts have been made to improve family well-being and strengthen international cooperation for social development based on the recommendations and perspectives of member states.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 1989 as the “International Year of Families.” Later, under a resolution adopted in 1993, May 15 was designated as the International Day of Families, which has been officially observed worldwide since 1994.

The day is considered an opportunity to raise awareness about the social, economic, and demographic issues affecting families. Family-centered policies and programs are also regarded as essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the 193 member states of the United Nations in 2015.

The United Nations has emphasized the crucial role of families in reducing poverty, eliminating discrimination, strengthening social protection, and promoting inclusive development.
