Over 10,000 betting apps and websites blocked in Nepal

KATHMANDU: More than 10,000 applications and websites related to online betting have been blocked in Nepal, according to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA).

NTA Deputy Director Suryaprasad Lamichhane said illegal betting-related apps and websites have been identified and taken down in coordination with internet service providers.

He said that ISPs have so far reported blocking over 10,000 such apps and websites, while Nepal Telecom alone has blocked more than 21,000. He added that the identification and blocking process is ongoing.

The move has been implemented as part of the government’s governance reform plan. The Cabinet meeting held on Chaitra 13 approved a 100-point governance reform agenda, which includes a provision to block betting-related apps and websites within 24 hours.

Following the decision, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology issued a ministerial directive on March 29 instructing the NTA to take necessary action. Acting on the directive, the authority coordinated with ISPs to immediately block all identified betting-related platforms operating through digital channels.

Section 125 of the National Criminal Code, 2017, prohibits betting activities. Those found guilty can face confiscation of funds and up to one year in prison along with a fine of up to Rs 10,000.

Similarly, the Advertisement Regulation Act, 2019, prohibits advertisements that promote gambling or unauthorized lotteries. Violations can also result in legal punishment, including up to one year of imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 10,000.

The government has urged the public not to use or operate betting-related apps and websites, warning of strict legal action against those involved in unauthorized activities.

The authority has also urged citizens to remain vigilant, avoid illegal digital platforms, and report any suspicious apps or websites to the relevant authorities.
