NC Disciplinary Committee to decide action against Purna Bahadur Khadka

KATHMANDU: The Central Disciplinary Committee of the Nepali Congress is meeting today at the party’s central office in Sanepa to deliberate on potential disciplinary action against former Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka.

The meeting, coordinated by Taraman Gurung, follows a series of unauthorized statements issued by Khadka using the party’s official letterhead while identifying himself as the “Acting President.”

The friction intensified after Khadka issued a statement on March 29 objecting to the high-profile arrests of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

Both leaders were detained in connection with culpable homicide cases related to the suppression of the September 2025 Gen Z protests, based on the recommendations of the Gauri Bahadur Karki-led inquiry commission.

Following this, the Disciplinary Committee held a meeting on April 1 and issued a formal warning to Khadka, stating that his use of the Acting President title was illegitimate and violated the party statute.

Despite the initial warning, Khadka has continued to engage in parallel organizational activities. From March 31 to April 2, he convened meetings with central committee members elected from the 14th General Convention to congratulate newly elected MPs, further challenging the authority of the current establishment led by Gagan Thapa.

Most recently, on Monday, April 13, Khadka issued another press release through the party letterhead, vehemently opposing the “Jara Ma Jau Abhiyan” (Root Campaign) and the decision to mandate digital updates for active memberships.

Party insiders suggest that today’s meeting will determine whether to seek a formal clarification from Khadka or to initiate more severe disciplinary measures as per the Nepali Congress Statute.

While the specific nature of the action is yet to be finalized, the committee is expected to issue a decisive ruling to curb parallel power structures within the party. This meeting will be immediately followed by a Central Work Execution Committee meeting at 2:00 PM to discuss the party’s broader strategic direction and the selection of the Parliamentary Party Leader.
