US warns citizens to leave Iraq after missile hits embassy

BAGHDAD: The US Embassy in Baghdad has urged all American citizens in Iraq to leave the country “immediately” following a missile strike on its building early Saturday, BBC reported.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has renewed calls for international allies to help secure the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route. In posts on Truth Social, Trump urged the UK and other countries to join the US in deploying ships to the strait, emphasizing that nations receiving oil through the passage “must take care” of it.

In an interview with NBC, Trump stated he is not ready to make a deal with Iran, describing the current terms as insufficient, and added that the US could strike Iran’s Kharg Island “a few more times just for fun.” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded that the Strait of Hormuz would only be closed to Tehran’s “enemies.”

The region continues to experience tensions, with a fire still burning at the port of Fujairah in the UAE after it was targeted by a drone attack early Saturday. In Tehran, a local resident expressed concern over the US strikes on Kharg Island, which handles about 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports, telling BBC Persian that continued attacks could “end up with a ruined Iran.”
